The Fire Brigade in Jerez was called out to 30 fires in rubbish containers throughout the city last night as the strike by Urbaser employees continues. In the Mopu district, residents threw stones at the Fire Brigade to try and stop them putting out the fires.
In other areas, containers and rubbish bags have been used as barricades and several streets have had to be closed to traffic. There have been earlier incidents of containers being set on fire but not on the same scale as last night.
The strike has been continuing for eighteen days and there is around 3,300 tons of rubbish accumulated on the streets. Residents complain that the 50% minimum service level imposed by the Supreme Court (TSJA) is not being adhered to.
According to Jerez Council, the whole strike relates to a reduction in employee salaries of €200.
