Candles placed on the Balcón de Europa as a list of names was read out was a stark, visual reminder of just how many men, women and children have died this year in Spain as a result of domestic violence.
Sunday was the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and outside the iglesia El Salvador on the Balcón de Europa, a crowd of around 120 people gathered to pay homage to those who have died and to show their rejection of domestic violence of any kind.
A number of local figures, including a young girl, took turns in reading out sections of the list of domestic violence victims and, as each name was read out, a candle was placed on the ground. Poems were also read out.
