In Huelva, DNA has helped a suspected ‘stolen baby’ locate his biological mother after forty-seven years.
The baby was born in a hospital in northern Spain in 1965 but disappeared under what are described as ‘mysterious circumstances’. The baby was later adopted by a family in Huelva.
When his adoptive parents died, the man began to investigate his origins and contacted the organisation SOS Bebés Robados and underwent DNA testing and the data was recorded in the Neodiagnostica data bank. The data produced a match, after which further testing was carried out.
It was then confirmed that the two matching data samples were mother and son.
Of the suspected several hundred thousand instances of babies being stolen from their parents, particularly during the Franco era, only a handful of cases have so far been successfully resolved.
