A woman has been remanded in custody after trying to leave a hospital in Málaga with a baby which was not hers. Police suspect there is a connection between the detainee and the mother of the baby who entered the hospital under a false name.
The two women involved, a 33 year old Spanish national and a 24 year old foreign national, travelled together down from Barcelona. After plans for a home birth failed, the pregnant woman was admitted to the Hospital Materno Infantil in Málaga, giving a false name.
The child was born on November 30th. One woman then tried to leave the hospital with the baby while the other remained in hospital but was apprehended. It is thought that this is a case of selling babies.
