The unions at Iberia – UGT, CCOO, USO, Asetma and Sictpla – have decided to maintain their planned strike call for December 14th, 17th, 18th, 19th, 20th and 21st after a meeting with the management of the airline failed to yield results.
The unions are protesting about the proposed restructuring of the loss-making Spanish carrier which will see the loss of 4,500 jobs as well as seeing the airline concentrate on more profitable routes.
The unions believe that the restructuring plan is a ploy by the parent company IAG to dismantle Iberia in favour of BA. On the other hand, IAG has stated that the restructuring is necessary to remedy the huge losses suffered by the airline and that if no agreement is reached with the unions, far more drastic measures would be necessary.
A strike over the Christmas period should really help the situation.
