At least three companies have so far expressed an interest in running the paid parking scheme, the so-called Blue Zone system, in Vélez-Málaga and Torre del Mar. The current idea is to have the system up and running in 2013.
Local businesses, or at least the Association of Employers, are in favour of the Blue Zone limited-parking system in commercial areas on the basis that it should produce more rotation of vehicles and therefore increase business in these areas.
The Blue Zone system would be introduced in stages and some of the companies expressing an interest in managing the system have apparently offered to do so in exchange for the parking fees collected, which would mean no cost to the municipal coffers.
Further meetings to discuss the subject are expected to take place this week.
In Vélez-Málaga, phase one would include calles Camino Viejo de Málaga, Cervantes, Cristo (between Cervantes and Carmerlitas), Canalejas, Reñidero and from the Reyes Católicos roundabout to the Health Centre Vélez Norte.
Phase two would be calles Del Río, Alcalde José Herrera, Juan Barranquero and Paseo de los Naranjos.
Phase three would be plaza del Trabajo, Lope de Vega, Joaquín Lobato and La Gloria.
In Torre del Mar, phase one would be calles Del Mar, Princesa and San Martín.
Phase two would be calle Duque de Ahumada and plaza de la Axarquía.
