Apart from the general reduction in Christmas lighting this year due to the financial crisis, understandable in many ways, another noticeable difference was the lack, not only in Nerja but along the entire coast, of festive songs, carols etc, being played in shops, malls etc. In some coastal towns there was almost a total absence of such festive songs. This was apparently also due to the crisis, establishments being unwilling to pay large sums of money to the SGAE (Performing Rights Society) for the privilege of entertaining their clientelle.
