Back in May 2012, the Council replaced half of the sea wall railings at Torrecilla beach and Plaza Fabrica de los Cangrejos, the new barriers being of more durable stainless steel. The Council then asked the Department of Coasts to finance and finish the job, continuing the process from the square to the end of the walkway.
Of course this has not happened yet and the state of the existing railings on this second stretch is, to put it mildly, appalling. And dangerous.
Some sections have collapsed, some swing if you touch them and the rest probably shouldn’t be trusted with any weight. The rusting and corrosion is easy to see. Perhaps, and particularly with ‘image’ always given such prominence in any decisions, it would be wise to replace the railings now and then sort out whose fault the problem was or who is ultimately going to pay for it.
