The Junta de Andalucia has stated that it cannot get involved in the financing of municipal transport systems in which it has no jurisdiction, namely the tram system, and that any such responsibility would belong to the state.
It was also pointed out that State funding of urban transport systems for municipalities over over 50,000 people has been reduced during the past two years.
Vélez-Málaga Council says that unless 50% funding is forthcoming, an amount of €1.5 million, by next month, the three trams will be rented out to the city of Sydney in Australia.
Peter Wilkinson says:
This saga seems to be never ending. Why does Velez Malaga council not finally admit that it was a no hoper in the first place. Insufficient population, started and finished in the wrong places. Similar systems only work in cities with vast suburban areas where trams run from early morning to late night at frequent intervals where if you miss one another will be along in five to ten minutes time.
