The ceramics industry in Vélez-Málaga continues to suffer as a result of the collapse of the construction industry, the 16 remaining factories only managing a turnover of €500,000 in 2012, down by 50% on 2011. During the boom years there were 45 factories, but those days are long gone. Not all of the 16 survivors are operating full time and only 50 people are employed, much now being done by the family members themselves.
