An investigation by the National Police, started in 2011, has confirmed the theft of a baby in 1964 in Valencia, the mother having been told at the time that the baby had died. Mother and daughter have now been reunited.
The police investigation began in October 2011 after the daughter stated that she thought she could have been one of the ‘stolen babies’ of the Franco era. Police studied data from a hospital in the area and ended up with a list of around 200 women who had given birth in the facility.
Eventually, and after DNA tests had been carried out, a mother and child ‘match’ was found.
The mother was surprised to find out that her daughter was, in fact, still alive. At the time of the birth, she was informed that the baby had died, although she was never shown the body and no details were ever given as to the place of burial.
Investigations are continuing to try and ascertain who was responsible for the abduction.
