New municipal ordinances approved by the government envisage non-residents having to pay two or three times more than residents for the use of sports facilities, while residents can expect tax increases of between 40% and 150% to use such facilities.
The Council justifies the increases on the grounds of the Adjustment Plan 2012 and the fact that in no case are maintenance costs being currently covered.
Also proposed under the ordinance is the creation of a Sports Licence, necessary for anyone wishing to use the municipal sports facilities at the ‘resident tariff’. The licence will cost €25 a year or €10 per year for the long-term unemployed, retired or for children of the long-term unemployed, and is only available to those registered on the municipal census.
To use the swimming pool, the cost will rise from €13 for one hour, twice per week, to €17 provided the user has the Sports Licence (€25 per year). Non-residents will have to pay €36 for one hour, twice per week sessions.
