Iberia has presented an Employment Regulation Expedient to all the unions representing various staff at the airline in which 3,807 people, 19% of the workforce, will be affected.
In a statement, the parent company IAG confirmed that the Spanish airline has informed union representatives, employees and the Ministry of Employment and Social Security of an expedient for the dismissal of staff for ‘economic reasons, production and organization’, in accordance with current regulations under Article 51 of the General Workforce Statute.
The original restructuring plan presented in November 2012 envisaged a reduction in the workforce of 4,500 and a reduction in capacity of 15% by eliminating unprofitable routes. The plan was made in order to ‘save Iberia’ as the airline is making huge losses.
The situation will be negotiated with the unions over the next 30 days.
