The town of Algatocín, population 900 people, has had a new, modern cemetery on the outskirts of town since 2009, built at a cost of over €1,000,000. However, it remains empty, despite the existing cemetery in the centre of town being full to capacity with no room for expansion.
The problem is that access to this modern new cemetery is via a road which crosses a protected agricultural track which cannot be asphalted. The Council has apparently tried on a number of occasions to seek the necessary authorisation to use the problem section but to no avail.
In the meantime, emergency niches have had to be built within the existing cemetery. The new facility contains 200 places as well as a mortuary. Lack of use of this new facility is resulting in its slow deterioration.
