In 2012, the Supermarket chain Mercadona posted a net profit of €508 million, up 7%, made domestic investments of €650 million and created 4,000 direct jobs.
The chain decided to postpone international expansion and concentrate on the domestic scene, opening 60 new supermarkets to bring their total number to 1,411, 4% more than the previous year.
The company also provided €23 million compensation to its workforce to offset tax increases.
In 2013, Mercadona plans to invest another €600 million, opening 60 more stores and completing new distribution centres in Guadix (Granada) and Abrera (Barcelona).
Plans for 2014/2015 include tryimng to establish their first supermarket in the Basque country.
