Spain’s double-dip recession continues to take its toll on consumer spending, retail sales declining by 10.2% in January 2013 according to the National Statistics Institute.
All areas of the retail sector suffered falls in sales in January, as they also did in December 2012. Small stores were particularly badly hit with an annual decline of 14.2%. Large stores saw their sales decline by 12.2%. large chains also saw a decline but it was much smaller ar 3.4%.
Sales of household equipment fell by 12.2, personal equipment by 10.4% and food sales were down by 6.0% from a year earlier as people cut back.
