The 240 regular users of a social kitchen Emaús in Estepona could soon be without what is for many their only meal of the day due to the unpaid salaries of the four cooks employed at the centre.
The facility opened in April 2010 to help the more needy in the community and the Council agreed to pay the salaries of four cooks, each earning €1,000 per month. The cooks are the only people working with the organisation who receive any remuneration. However, they have not been paid since October 2010.
The organisation raises funds through donations and fund-raising activities and has just made an agreement with Carrefour for the provision of food. The organisers of the kitchen say they have kept their end of the bargain but the Council has not.
The Council debt is put at €104,000 as of December 2012.
