The island of El Hierro has suffered over one hundred tremors during the weekend, the largest being at 10:59 on Sunday morning and registering 4.9 on the Richter scale.
An hour earlier, a quake measuring 4.5 hit the island, the epicentres being out to see off Frontera at a depth of between 18 km and 20km. Both quakes were felt by the local residents.
The 4.9 tremor is the most severe since the volcanic activity began in the area in 2011. There is limited circulation on some roads due to the threat of rockslides.
