Nerja has become quite a popular destination for various sporting teams or individual athletes to come and train, especially during the winter months. In the run-up to Easter, there were athletes from Britain, Germany, Czech Republic, Austria, Sweden and Poland, amongst others, using the facilities at the Enrique López Cuenca Stadium.
As many as 150 were using the facilities during morning and afternoon sessions. This has led the authorities to extend the opening hours of the stadium to accommodate the athletes.
During 2012, 567 foreign athletes used the stadium in the period from February to July and this season the figure is expected to rise by around fifty percent.
