There was a midnight evacuation last night of the 649 residents of Barbaño, Badajoz, due to the risk of flooding in the area. The population was moved in a fleet of buses to the sports centre in Montijo.
The action, a precautionary measure, was taken as the río Guadiana continues to rise, with flooding occurring in a number of areas. The decision was taken at 23:30 and the government of Extremadura arranged for buses and ambulances to transport the population to safety.
The river has become a cause for concern due to the recent rains and the need to drain some of the reservoirs.
