The Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) is starting a new crackdown on speeding as from Monday and continuing until Sunday April 14th. The new campaign will mainly be carried out on conventional roads, as opposed to highways.
A total of 1,022 people were killed in accidents on conventional roads during 2012, representing 78% of all road traffic fatalities.
At the same time as carrying out controls on motorists, the DGT will be conducting an information campaign, including through a number of radio commercials, to raise awareness on such matters as stopping distances at various speeds.
Exceeding the speed limit carries fines ranging from €100 to €600 plus the loss of between 2 and 6 licence points.
