It is reported that the government is proposing to amend the Civil Code to increase the minimum marrying age from 14 to 16 years.
Minors can currently marry at age 14 years if they receive judicial permission to do so or without the need for such permission if their parents consent to the marriage.
The government also apparently wants Congress to debate the minimum age of consent in sexual relations, which in Spain currently stands at 13 years. It is not clear whether they propose to raise or lower the age of consent.
These are part of broader measures being proposed to further safeguard the interests of minors. Other initiatives include dealing with harmful content on the internet and the speeding up the adoption process to reduce the number of children being sent to care homes.
