A fire in the old part of Bermeo in the early hours of this morning necessitated the evacuation of dozens of residents and two buildings have collapsed.
The fire began at 04:00 in an unoccupied house in calle Juan Nardiz in Bermeo and spread to affect six other buildings. At around 05:00, the building in which the fire originated collapsed, followed at 07:20 by the collapse of a building opposite.
The area was sealed off and evacuations took place in calle Juan Nardiz, Erremedio, Nekazari and Intxausti. The residents were moved to the social centre in plaza del Ayuntamiento.
The cause of the fire is not yet known. The buildings are mainly wooden structures, helping the fire to spread.
A fireman and a Local Police officer were slightly injured.
