Jerez Council has opted to pay compensation for unfair dismissal to 260 employees rather than reinstatement following a ruling by the Supreme Court of Justice in Andalucia. However, the Council has announced its intention to appeal the decision and they will not actually pay anything until their appeal has been heard.
If the Supreme Court upholds the ruling, the Council will have to pay 45 days per year for employees in service before February 2012, the vast majority, and 33 days per year for those who started work after February 2012. The compensation has to be paid from the public purse. Which in Jerez has a huge hole in it and cobwebs.
According to the unions, the overall cost will be €20 million. According to the Council it will be €12 million. No wonder they are in trouble.
