In the first five days of operation of the dining facility set up in Vélez-Málaga to help those with limited or no financial resources as a result of unemployment and the general financial crisis, a total of 750 meals were distributed free of charge to needy families in the community.
The initiative is run by the Association of Workers for Social Integration (ATIS) and the idea is for the beneficiaries of the service to contribute in some manner, such as by working, selling raffle tickets to raise funds etc.
The facility is located in the old Frias bar in calle Pilar de San Roque and is open Monday to Friday for serving lunches.
The organisers have been surprised and overwhelmed by the demand for lunches and have had to start asking for the necessary documentation from those visiting the facility to prove eligibility. The Association is now appealing for contributions of such things as yoghourt, puddings, seasonal fruits and meat.
