Operation ‘Melonar’ has resulted in the seizure of 33 tons of hashish, the biggest ever haul in Guardia Civil history. The drugs were hidden in a shipment of melons being transported from Tangier to Algeciras.
Guardia Civil officers stopped a refrigerated truck travelling from Tangier in Morocco to Algeciras and carried out an inspection of the contents. The first pallets in the lorry were found to contain melons, as listed on the manifest, but further inspection led to the discovery of 33 tons of hashish.
The drugs had an estimated value of around €50 million. The driver of the lorry, a Moroccan national, was arrested and charged with a crime against the public health.
