Atlético Madrid lifted the Copa del Rey after a 2-1 victory over city rivals Real Madrid in an often ill-tempered match which saw both teams end the game with just ten men.
Cristiano Ronaldo gave Real an early lead with a fine header before Diego Costa levelled matters once more. Plenty of chances, particularly for Real as they hit the woodwork three times and were thwarted on several occasions by some fine saves by Courtois in the Atlético goal.
It was 1-1 after ninety minutes and into extra time it went. It was a last gasp strike from Miranda which broke the deadlock and the silverware belonged to Atlético with their first victory over their city rivals for fourteen years.
There were a lot of cynical fouls and the odd bit of play acting throughout the second half, and particularly during extra time, with the referee being kept very busy issuing cards of various colours.
Real coach José Mourinho was the first to see red, being ordered from the touchline for protesting too much about a refereeing decision in the 76th minute. Cristiano Ronaldo was the first player to be dismissed after he appeared to kick Gabi in the face and right at the very end, Gabi himself was sent off.
There were ugly scenes on the touchline as players and club officials clashed and the Atl’etico keeper, Courtois, was hit on the head by something thrown from the stands.
There were 13 yellow and 3 red cards issued during the match.
