The last of the traditional family-run kiosks in Nerja, the Kiosko Cerica in avenida Pescia, has been consigned to history. The six square metre metal kiosk had been operated by Manuel Gutiérrez and his family for the past 42 years, at various times selling newspapers and magazines, tobacco, sweets, drinks, toys and other items.
For Manuel Gutiérrez, who is married to the daughter of the first owner of the kiosk, the small metal structure has been the livelihood for him and his family the past four decades.
The traditional kiosks, open all year round, were once a common sight, mainly selling newspapers, magazines and tobacco, but they have gradually been phased out until now, only two remain in Nerja. These are Ricardo’s on the paseo Balcón de Europa, selling sweets, drinks and the odd toy, and one in the Barriada de los Poetas, although this one is currently closed.
Some will remember just a few years back when there was a similar kiosk in Plaza Cavana, that one disappearing when the square was renovated, and one in Plaza La Marina in avenida Castilla Perez.
Nowadays, all the kiosks in town are the plastic variety, provided by the ice cream companies and hired out on temporary permits by the Council as seasonal concessions.
The financial crisis took its toll on these traditional, family-owned kiosks as margins fell and sales declined. For Manuel Gutiérrez it is the end of an era, but also the start of a new one as he will be carrying on his business in larger premises, around 80 square metres, right next to the old kiosk. He will be expanding his stock to include souvenirs and items for the beach.
