The plenary session of the Nerja Caves Foundation has approved a motion by the Mayor of Nerja and senior vice-president of the Nerja Caves Foundation, José Alberto Armijo, for the Nerja Caves to be included in the World Heritage of Patrimony.
The proposal calls for the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Junta de Andalucia, the Ministry of Culture and various organisations, institutions and administrations.
This is by no means the first time that this proposal has been made. In 2002, some 120 scientists from 23 countries made a similar proposal.
In 2003, the IU in the Junta de Andalucia made the same proposal but this was rejected by the PSOE. In 2009, the IU presented a non-legislative proposal which was unanimously approved, although the PSOE were initially against the motion.
In May 2009, a proposal by the Nerja Caves Foundation to initiate proceedings to include the Nerja Caves in the World Heritage of Patrimony was approved, but nothing ever happened. Maybe they will have more luck this time.
