There are reports of at least four bogus gas inspectors making the rounds in Nerja and Maro, charging the unwary and vulnerable €250 or more for their services, which at most consist of fitting a new orange hose to a gas bottle. These individuals are also quite verbally aggressive.
A gas inspection is compulsory by law every five years, but is only ever carried out at the request of the householder and reputable, official gas companies never tout for business from door to door. The actual cost of such an inspection is currently around €50.
These sort of incidents will probably increase during the summer as these unscrupulous individuals seek to con the unwary tourists renting apartments. see Gas Installations.

I was lisitng a property and a bogus gas man knocked on the door, I told him no gas and not interested, then another man appeared from around the corner..very intimitading so I chased them and called police. The reply from the local police was its up to the person if they let them in or not ? I wasnt very happy with that reply and said the men were insistant, so sat in car waiting for the police while tracking gas men… no one came even after 45 minutes. Just to finish off I saw same gas men blantently walking though the Balcon de Europa with uniforms and clip board, scruffy as hell too, 3 of them, so they are breeding now.
