The new Málaga II prison, located in Archidona, just needs equipment and staff but there is still no indication as to when the €100 million installation will open. One thing is certain, though, and that is that due to budget cuts, it will not have a swimming pool as originally planned.
The prison will be one of the most modern in the country with 1,000 cells and a capacity for 2,000 inmates.
Budget cuts of €96 million agreed by the Council of Ministers mean that other prisons already planned, such as in Siete Aguas, Comunidad Valenciana, Soria and Ceuta will also be completed without swimming pools.
Improvement works are to be carried out in 39 prisons but plans for the creation of ten special social units and units for mothers have now been rejected as ‘unnecessary’.
The new prison was originally designed to alleviate the congestion in Alhaurín de la Torre prison, but that will not now be happening for some time.
