The town of Vera in Almeria is the new Guinness record holder for communal nude bathing after 729 people stripped off on El Playazo beach on Sunday morning, beating the previous record of 506 set in New Zealand.
The mayor of Vera, José Carmelo Jorge (PP), called the event a ‘tremendous success’ and stated that the funds raised will go to a charitable cause. Around 600 people had initially been expected to take part in the record attempt.
The mayor added that the event was good for the promotion of tourism, and especially nudist tourism, which has the full support of the authorities.
The record attempt was timed to coincide with the Day without Swimsuits organised by the Spanish Naturist Federation to promote tolerance of nudity on beaches.
On Saturday, Vera held their first Popular Nudist Race, a 3.1 km race through the streets of the nudist section of the town.
