Churros

churros, AlbiChurros are a popular breakfast snack in Spain, sometimes sprinkled with icing sugar and often dipped in hot chocolate (colacao) or white coffee (cafe con leche). They are sometimes referred to as a ‘Spanish doughnut’, although this must be by people who have never seen a doughnut.

Churros are fried-dough pastry, generally choux—based, and are not only popular in Spain but also in France, the Philippines, Portugal, Latin America, the USA and Spanish-speaking Caribbean islands.

The exact origin is not known, but one of the main theories is that the recipe was brought to the Iberian peninsular from China by Portuguese explorers. Whatever the origin, they are a tasty breakfast snack – most bars, cafes etc in Nerja only serve churros until around midday or one-oclock, although there are of course exceptions to the rule, cafeteria Albi on the Balcón de Europa being one of these.

So, where are some good places to find these tasty morsels in Nerja? Well, generally acclaimed as being one of the best, if not the best, is a kiosk – churreria – at the Iranzo roundabout on avenida Pescia, outside the Narixa school. There are invariably long queues.

Very good are the churros at the cafe Cuatro Esquinas in calle Pintada, on the corner of calle Angustias. Bar Colorao is another good choice (available until midday) as is Albi on the Balcón de Europa (available all day).
