The mayor of Vélez Málaga, Francisco Delgado Bonilla PP), has laid the foundation stone for the jardín del Cerro, a €2.7 million project to turn the cerro de San Cristóbal into a large cultural, environmental and entertainment area.
The total area is 26,000 square metres and over half the money is destined for the construction of green areas and the planting of 25,000 colourful plants.
There will be one kilometre of paved walkway, ten rustic gazebos and a dozen viewpoints, each with information boards. There will be an access road to the chapel, a basement cafe, an amphitheatre with seating for 350 people, a parking area behind the chapel and the main square in front of the chapel will be remodelled.
The project has been planned since 2007 and funding is through FOMIT 2008, municipal funds and the programme Urbana ‘De Toda la Villa. The work will be carried out by the public company TRAGSA and the execution period is twelve months.
