Fuengirola has been a pioneer in the implementation of underground rubbish containers, or ‘ecological islands’ as they tend to be known and the Council is now managing to have them built at no cost to municipal coffers.
Under changes to the PGOU (General Plan), there is an obligation for promoters to include ecological islands in their projects and undertake this work rather than the Council. Two islands have so far been completed this year under this new scheme and a third, in calle Tucán in Torreblanca, is currently under construction. This one is for cardboard, paper and glass.
These projects have saved the Council an estimated €66,965.
