A one metre tall statue of Isabella and Ferdinand will soon be adorning the plaza del antiguo Ayuntamiento, a commemoration of the fall of Fuengirola castle to the Christian forces on August 7th 1485.
The statue is the work of Rosario García and the work reflects a modern style and depicts both Isabella and Ferdinand V.
Following the reconquest of Ronda and Marbella, the army of reconquest, led by Ferdinand V, arrived in Fuengirola and on August 7th 1485 took the castle without a fight, the Muslims fleeing to Mijas as soon as they say the army.
Fuengirola has, through the ages, been under Phoenician, Roman, Muslim and Christian control.
