Three Spanish athletes have tested positive in doping tests carried out at the Spain Athletics Championships held in Madrid in July. The tests were the first to be independently carried out by the Spanish Agency for the Protection of Health and Fight Against Doping (AEPSAD) as part of changes to toughen up anti-doping measures in Spain.
Sergio Sánchez, Spanish 5,000 meters champion, a silver medalist in the 3,000 meters at the World Indoor Championships in Doha 2010 and a former European record holder at the distance indoors, tested positive for EPO.
Long-distance runner Alberto Lozano also tested positive. The third adverse result in the tests belonged to steeplechaser Ángel Mullera, who tested positive for corticosteroids and an investigation has been opened into the runner who will now have to demonstrate that he has medical permission to use the substance in question due to his asthma.
