The IX Seabed Cleaning Day is scheduled for Sunday September 29th, an exercise organised by Buceo Costa Nerja – the Nerja Dive Centre – on Burriana beach.
The cleaning operation will involve 150 people, 40 of them divers, and will cover the entire municipal coastline from El Playazo at the border with Torrox to Maro beach.
According to Bernabé Jorge Toledo, head of Buceo Costa Nerja, there is less and less debris collected each year, which can only be a good thing. Much of the debris collected from the seabed is plastic which has come from the greenhouses in Almeria, although there are also a lot of other items found from umbrellas to old washing machines.
All participants will be fed and receive a diploma and a t-shirt. As well as being a cleaning exercise, the event is also aimed at raising awareness about the marine environment.
