A fisherman discovered an unexploded mortar shell from the Spanish Civil War close to Ferrara Playa in Torrox Costa.
The shell was from a Brixia mortar which was used by republican forces during the Civil War and was also used in Italy. Despite its age, the payload in the device was still stable and therefore extremely dangerous to handle.
Local Police cordoned off the area until explosives experts arrived to study and subsequently destroy the device.
The Guardia Civil advises anyone finding such a device to mark the location and then call the authorities via 092.
