Beatriz de Guindos, niece of the Economy Minister Luis de Guindos, has resigned from her post at the controversial National Commission for the Markets and Competition (CNMC) after just one day, a move which puts the future of another member of this independent watchdog, Micaela Arias, the daughter of Agriculture and Environment Minister Miguel Arias Cañete, in doubt.
The media were not slow to hint at nepotism when the appointments were made.
The CNMC has caused much controversy in its short life. The CNMC was officially created as an independent body, although some of the board members are reported to be close to the government. In addition, the decision to merge several supervisory bodies was even questioned by the European Commission and they insisted on a number of changes.
