The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment has approved a compensation package woth €900,000 for fishermen affected by the dispute over fishing rights around Gibraltar.
The temporary measure, published in the Official State Gazette (BOE) today allocates €300,000 for 2013 (August 1st 2013 to January 31st 2014) and €600,000 for 2014. The measure is aimed at reducing the economic hardship caused by the recent spat with the Gibraltar government during which Spanish boats have been prevented from fishing near The Rock.
The financial assistance is for an initial period of six months, extendable if the current situation persists.
The compensation will be available to the owners or operators of vessels belonging to the fishermen’s brotherhoods of La Linea de La Concepción and Algeciras and the Algeciras Producers and Shipowners Association.
