The Mayor of Alhaurín el Grande, Juan Martín Serón (PP), has announced that he will step down after the Supreme Court upheld his conviction for bribery and banned him from holding public office for a period of one year.
The mayor, who was sentenced by the Provincial Court in Málaga in January 2012 to a one year ban from public office and fined €200,000, now intends to appeal to the Constitutional Court, although this will not affect the judgement of the Supreme Court.
Serón, along with Gregorio Guerra, was convicted of demanding €122,000 from a businessman for the granting of a building licence for the construction of an apartment block.
