The old, rusting metal stands, seating and other items erected in the Nerja Caves during the 1970’s have all now been removed.
The seemingly complex task of removing the 20,000 kilos of metal was carried out in three phases and involved the Nerja Caves Foundation, the Junta de Andalucia, the Scientific Council and the IICN and was overseen by José Luis Sanchidrián, professor of archaeology at the University of Córdoba.
The project has restored the natural underground landscape and is being heralded as one of the largest actions to have taken place inside a tourist cave in the world in the field of conservation.
