Continued internal conflict and opposition complaints of a lack of Local Police presence on the streets of Nerja during the summer are thought to have been the reason for the change, by decree, in ultimate responsibility for the force, this now in the hands of Councillor José Miguel García.
The internal conflict within the Local Police has been ongoing since at least 2008, with claims and counter-claims and legal action involving officers, unions and the Police Chief, Antonio Navas, being regularly occurrences.
Neighbouring Torrox also suffers the consequences of similar internal conflict within their Local Police force, but to a greater extent.
There was certainly an almost constant police presence on the Balcón de Europa, at least two officers, during the entire summer season and a sufficiency to assist with the towing of vehicles and the issuing of at least fifty parking tickets on one evening during the feria.
