In addition to the conversion of the old Town Hall into the Hotel Con Encanto, the square in front of the building is to be renovated at a cost of €80,000 and will be the site of a monument to the Catholic Monarchs.
It will be the first renovation of the square for forty years and will affect an area of 455 square metres in a bid to gain more space for pedestrian activity.
In addition, a three-metre tall statue is to be placed in the square. The statue is the work of Rosario García and is a homage to the Catholic Monarchs who, in 1485, retook the Sohail castle as part of the reconquest of Spain.
The square, currently known as the Town Hall Square, is also set to be renamed. Not all the political parties were in favour of the statue, however, with the IU describing the €19,000 project as frivolous and unnecessary and not an investment that will serve to attract more tourists to the city.
