The fire at La Caleta beach in Maro at Christmas destroyed around 8,000 square metres of land, mostly reeds but also including thirty avocado trees, two terraces of bananas and two greenhouses.
The access track to the beach was also affected, particularly the wooden slats and poles holding the guide ropes, but remains passable.
The cause of the blaze is not yet known but a camping gaz cannister has apparently been found at the scene. According to the Council, the damaged area should grow back to its original state in a few months.
The Council has indicated that it will undertake repairs to the damaged track down to the beach and has requested the collaboration of the Department of Coasts. The Council also plans to removed the burnt remains.
