There is a rumour circulating, as yet unconfirmed or refuted, that the Junta de Andalucia has given the businesses on Rl Playazo beach, Nerja, six weeks to quit the area.
There are a couple of boatyards and four bars on El Playazo. Could it be true? It would seem a little strange considering the start of building the promenade, let alone the fancy hotels and zillions of houses planned by the Council, is at least one year away.
The businesses do have to go eventually, but sudden eviction would be unusual and rather odd, even considering the traditional animosity between the municipal and regional governments.
However, it would be unwise to rule out party political or personal considerations when such decisions are made. Common sense, as we all know, has no place in politics.
On the other hand, The Old Cellar has reopened in calle Los Huertos, after closing a few years ago, and the staff from Merendero Pepe Mesa on El Playazo beach are now apparently in The Old Cellar.
The Council has great plans for hotels and houses in the area behind El Playazo beach but has, reportedly, obtained a favourable ruling from the Supreme Court relating to the legality of constructing golf courses, marinas, houses and hotels within the municipality. That would not have gone down well with the regional government.
Only time will tell – getting any sort of information can be difficult, at a weekend it is impossible.
