In the coming months, Mijas Hippodrome will officially cease the activity it was designed for, namely horse racing.
The track has been in operation for 14 years and despite offering some of the biggest prize money in horse racing in Spain, it has never been profitable and has accumulated massive debts with the Tax Office, Social Security and others.
According to the Council, the facility has been losing about €1 million each year. Alternative activities for the area were introduced to try and keep the facility afloat, these including a second-hand market, an international football school and a karting track.
