The San Rafael cemetery in Málaga, the site of the largest mass graves of the Franco era in Spain, now has an official memorial to the more than 4,400 people known to have been executed there by the forces of the former dictator.
The memorial is a pyramid and it contains the remains of more than 4,000 people executed when the Nationalist forces entered the city. The pyramid is engraved with the names of victims and also contains a box of objects found at the site.
Years of research at the site of the grave have resulted in the identification of 2,840 human remains, while documentation states that more than 4,100 Republicans were killed here.
The official inauguration of the memorial was attended by many relatives of those killed by the Franco forces and a dove was released as a symbol of peace.
