After five days of unrest in Burgos over the conversion of a street into a boulevard, the Popular Party Mayor Javier Lacalle has announced the temporary suspension of the roadworks because city officials cannot guarantee the safety of the workers and demonstrators.
The Council estimates that the damage caused during the protests, often violent, amounts to around €50,000 euros. Containers were burned, street furniture destroyed and glass in phone booths, bus shelters and bank branches was smashed.
Residents in the Gamonal neighborhood have taken to the streets in an attempt to stop the planned conversion of Vitoria street into a major artery, arguing that it will only increase the traffic flow and noise.
